Remarks: |
Article defines the 'Modern' as against the attitudes practiced in ancient times. It mentions the gift of paintings by Jesuits to Mughal emperor Akbar's court, assignments made by Raja Ravi Varma to the Mysore Wodeyars and later with R.M. Hadpad at his Ken School of Art. The author points out that it was not until K.K. Hebbar, who supported many students to study at Baroda and Santiniketan, with Hebbar himself travelling abroad, and introducing new experimentations in Karnataka that there is a truly modern sensibility in art practice. It situates the modern in opposition to traditional practice using notions of freedom of self-expression, free brush strokes, intellectualism, art for art's sake, emotion, not compelled to be communicative or criticism oriented.
